Dr. Brook Nelson is a board-certified General, Minimally Invasive, and Breast Surgeon at Barrett Hospital & HealthCare. She earned her Doctor of Medicine (MD) from the University of Missouri–Kansas City in 2007 and completed her General Surgery residency at the University of Missouri–Kansas City in 2012. During residency, she gained extensive experience in laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery, as well as trauma and acute care general surgery, while training at two Level I Trauma Centers.
Following residency, Dr. Nelson began her surgical career practicing rural surgery in North Dakota. In 2015, she became a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. In 2017, she returned to Kansas City to serve as Program Director for the General Surgery Residency Program, where she developed a strong reputation as an accomplished robotic surgeon, educator, and leader in graduate medical education. She later became an Associate Professor of Surgery in 2024 and served as Chief of Surgical Services for the Eastern Kansas Veterans Affairs Healthcare System.
Dr. Nelson and her family felt a strong calling to return to rural living and were immediately drawn to Southwest Montana and its remarkable natural beauty. She is passionate about providing advanced surgical care close to home and is excited to serve patients and families throughout Dillon and Twin Bridges.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Nelson enjoys photography, kayaking, wildlife observation, rock, gem, and fossil collecting. She also enjoys traveling and spending quality time with her family.
