  • Barrett Hospital & HealthCare Recognized for Improvement in Patient Care

Barrett Hospital & HealthCare was recently awarded the Montana Rural Healthcare Performance Improvement Network’s Quality Improvement Award for its work on Social Drivers of Health (SDOH) Screening. The Montana Rural Healthcare Performance Improvement Network (PIN) is a voluntary membership of 50 critical access hospitals throughout the state. Through this Network, member hospitals are able to benchmark their performance with their peers on a variety of financial, utilization and direct patient care measures that encourage safe, effective, patient-centered care delivery in even the most remote communities of the state. PIN quality of care measures are based on national benchmarks, but are tailored to reflect the realities of the state’s rural population. Barrett Hospital & HealthCare has demonstrated a commitment to its community and the region it serves through its involvement with the MT Rural Healthcare PIN. Throughout the last year, PIN members focused on four core improvement areas; patient satisfaction and engagement, reducing readmissions, implementing social drivers of health screening documentation & screening rates. Award winners are required to demonstrate measurable improvement in one of the previously mentioned quality of care focus areas over the previous year and show consistent participation in the PIN’s data programs. Applicants are also required to demonstrate an active and leading role in supporting PIN quality improvement efforts by participating in PIN events and sharing with peers throughout the state. The mission of the MT Rural Healthcare PIN is to develop and provide a collaborative support system which will enable small rural hospitals to have the ability to deliver quality care and achieve customer satisfaction. PIN activities are supported by the Medicare Rural Hospital Flexibility (Flex) Program, which provides funding to spur quality and performance improvement activities, stabilize rural hospital finance and integrate emergency medical services (EMS) into existing health care systems. The program encourages the development of cooperative systems of care in rural areas to increase efficiencies.

  • Press Release: Barrett Hospital & HealthCare Addresses National Medicaid Cuts and Local Impact

DILLON, Mont. — In response to recent developments on the national stage regarding Medicaid funding, Barrett Hospital & HealthCare would like to reassure the local community that the immediate impact of these changes on our services will be minimal. On July 1, the U.S. Senate passed the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” (H.R. 1), advancing legislation that includes the most significant proposed cuts to Medicaid in history. The American Hospital Association (AHA) has voiced deep concern over the bill’s potential to displace nearly 12 million Americans from their healthcare coverage, increase hospital uncompensated care, and strain healthcare systems nationwide—especially in rural areas. However, while these sweeping federal changes are raising alarms across the country, Barrett Hospital & HealthCare is confident in Montana’s current Medicaid structure. Montana has a responsible and well-designed Medicaid program that aligns with both existing and newly proposed federal requirements. While approximately 16% of individuals within our service area are covered by Medicaid, only 10% of patients who received care at Barrett Hospital & HealthCare in fiscal year 2025 were Medicaid beneficiaries. This highlights a difference between overall community coverage and actual utilization at our facility. “While H.R.1 will impact healthcare nationwide, at Barrett Hospital & HealthCare we are confident in our ability to continue to provide local healthcare, fulfilling our mission to the community,” said Barrett Hospital & HealthCare’s CEO Taylor Rose. “Montana’s provider tax program, which helps finance the state Medicaid program, remains under the proposed cap and is not expected to be immediately impacted. Additionally, the state currently has systems in place to protect Medicaid patients from sudden or drastic disruptions in coverage with new requirements from the federal level.” The Montana Hospital Association (MHA) recently echoed this message in a June 30 letter to state and federal lawmakers, emphasizing that while the bill presents long-term risks, the structure of Montana’s Medicaid program continues to serve nearly 80,000 low-income, working residents effectively. The state’s program is not only fiscally responsible but also responsive to the needs of those it serves, with over 70% of Medicaid expansion beneficiaries currently employed. It is important to note, however, that further federal cuts beyond those currently proposed could create downstream effects. Should such measures occur, it may force the state to make difficult decisions about coverage, funding, and provider payments. Barrett Hospital & HealthCare will continue to monitor the situation closely and advocate for our patients and community. “We remain committed to delivering high-quality care to all patients—regardless of coverage,” said Taylor Rose. “Should federal changes evolve, our goal will always be to ensure that our community members retain access to the healthcare they need and deserve. We encourage the community to support Barrett Hospital & HealthCare by choosing local providers, thus sustaining the continuation of local health care. Supporting our local medical community helps ensure our services remain viable in the future.” For more information about Medicaid in Montana or updates on the federal legislation, please visit www.aha.org/medicaid . • Press Release: Barrett Hospital & HealthCare Revolutionizes Cancer Care for Rural Communities with New Infusion Services in Dillon

Dillon, Montana – September 30, 2024 – Barrett Hospital & HealthCare proudly announces the launch of its cancer infusion services, significantly enhancing rural healthcare access for cancer patients within Dillon, Beaverhead County, and surrounding rural areas. This innovative approach to delivery of cancer services ensures that rural patients no longer need to endure extensive travel to larger cities to receive critical cancer treatments away from their homes and their support systems. Originally envisioned as a collaborative project in 2022, with Montana State University, Bozeman Health, Barrett Hospital & HealthCare, and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), has now culminated as a trailblazing model for rural cancer care that can be replicated throughout rural communities nationwide. This framework will bring c ritical cancer treatments to people in rural areas instead of residents traveling long distances to urban places of care. “Increasing access to oncology care is our steadfast commitment at Bozeman Health Cancer Center, and we recognize this innovative and transformational partnership as another example of how we are carrying out this mission,” said Bozeman Health oncologist and ASCO pilot program medical director Dr. William Conkright. “With the introduction of our cancer infusion services, Barrett Hospital & HealthCare is addressing a crucial gap in necessary healthcare accessibility for our rural community,” said Carolyn Hansen, Chief Clinical Officer at Barrett Hospital & HealthCare. “We are committed to providing high-quality, compassionate care in Dillon that is equivalent to the care anyone would receive at a larger cancer center in Bozeman, Billings, or out of state. Our new cancer care services will allow patients to receive critical therapies close to home, surrounded by the support of their local community and loved ones, which contributes to better health outcomes.” Cancer care accessibility has long been a challenge in rural Montana. According to ASCO, rural regions across the nation, including Montana, face significant disparities in cancer care access. Limited local services often mean that rural patients are forced to travel long distances to urban centers, adding to the physical and emotional burdens of cancer treatment. “Traveling to larger cities for cancer treatment is not only exhausting but can also be a financial burden for many families,” said Taylor Rose, Chief Executive Officer of Barrett Hospital & HealthCare. “By bringing these treatments to Dillon and surrounding communities, we are removing barriers to essential care and supporting our community in a profound way. This initiative reflects our mission to improve lives by providing local healthcare.” Barrett Hospital & HealthCare emphasizes patient-centered care, ensuring that each patient's unique needs and preferences guide their cancer treatment journey. The organization is equipped with the latest technology and staffed by a team of highly trained oncology specialists and nurses dedicated to delivering personalized care. Patients will have access to a broad spectrum of infusion therapies, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and other targeted treatments, all within the comfort and convenience of a local setting. In addition to infusion therapies, Barrett Hospital & HealthCare also offers a highly experienced multidisciplinary treatment team with supportive services, including nutritional counseling, support groups, a dedicated pharmacist, surgical oncology, and other complementary services to support individuals and their families during their cancer journey. For more information about the cancer infusion services at Barrett Hospital & HealthCare, please visit www.barretthospital.org or contact our oncology department at 406-683-1109. Notes to Editors: 1.
